Our Head Instructor, Shihan Jeff Barrett, began training with Northern Karate in 1995. He holds a 6th-degree black belt in Karate and Okinawan Kobudo. Shihan Jeff has taught across Canada and Europe and lived in Japan for two years, where he continued his martial arts training in karate, kobudo, Japanese archery, and sumo, while learning Japanese language and culture.

He is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts and a teaching degree from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). He helped create and run the Northern Karate Personal Best School Program, which has raised over $250,000 to support local schools in the GTA.
